Child safety at home
When a baby appears at home, his parents are given much thought on question: what is child safety and how to ensure child's safety at home?
I'll try to give accurate and plain answers and recommendations on these frequently asked questions.
With child's arrival in the household and even earlier provident parents start repairing works in child's room, buy necessary furniture and try to provide all elements of décor for new-born child.
Children grow quickly. In 5-6 months your baby won't just lie in its little bed, but crawl and inspect new spaces, perceive the world in his room first, then in all the house.
Child's safety at home is a very essential thing. To secure the child and foresee possible problems in advance is the main parent's aim.
Small baby's hands sometimes reach things, which may represent a terrible danger for kid. When the house is unprepared, it always poses risks for a child.
Needles and cutting objects, sharp angles of furniture, household chemicals, staircase and more are the things which are extremely dangerous for a small explorer.
For an adult to notice potential threats it's quite enough to get on all fours and walk (or crawl) through the house. This way one will clearly see all the unsafe zones.
Frequently little children are attracted by shining bright things, objects that they can pick up, move or overturn, boxes, cases and bedside-tables, which they can open.
So how to ensure child's safety at home? What should we pay attention to?
Protection against electricity
- Your kid mustn't stay alone with working electrical appliances, such as iron, ventilator or heater. Wires of any appliances shouldn't hang down too.
- All wires should have proper isolation and, if possible, to be kept in special safety boxes.
- The sockets must be with safety plugs.
Drawers and lockers must be locked up. If there are no locks, then safety devices, special blockers and child safety latches, that fix furniture handles, are to help.
Soft covers are put onto sharp angles of furniture for the child not to injure himself if lost his balance.
When children learn how to walk, unsteady furniture becomes one of the dangerous factors too. Make sure, that all unsteady things in your house are fixed.
Doors and doorways
Front and interior doors are unsafe, because child can simply stick his fingers into them. And there's no house without doors. For this reason, retainers for blocking doors or safety caps are necessary.
The retainer of location is set on the floor, it prevents any door moves. The damper, which doesn't let the door to be closed, is set onto it. Door relockers and safety caps don't let the child to turn the handle and open it.
Also, among handy and useful devices are such things as the doorways for children. They are called child safety gates. Their function is to be somewhat like fence which prevents a child from getting into dangerous zones, like kitchen. Moreover, these gates also help to fence a child off the pets.
Child safety gates may be of different types, sizes and for various purposes. Anyway, it is quite easy to arrange safe play area.
The windows are the most dangerous place for any kid. This unsafe object shouldn't be wide open or possible to be opened by child himself.
The mosquito net in the window may be easily torn under the kid's weight. One should realize that such net is not intended for protection.
Removable handles, window relockers, sound signals of the opened window – all these will significantly help to increase the level of child's safety at home.
Bathroom and toilet
Child's safety in bathroom and toilet comes down to secure latches on the toilet bowl. The purpose for setting them is obvious – we don't want our children to wash their hands in the toilet bowl or to get the water out of it.
Wet and slippery floor after bathing is also unsafe. In order to avoid fallings and getting bruised you may put rubber mat in bathroom.
Household chemicals, detergents and cosmetics often attract babies by bright labels and interesting packaging. These substances are unsafe, so they must be hidden somewhere higher on the shelves, locked or kept in a separate closed room.
We can talk about child's safety in the house, in a kitchen, in a bathroom, on the stairs, near the window. About all these nuances I will tell you in detail in my blog.
